Is there a mild traumatic brain injury ?
MTBI can result from any serious blow to the head. These can occur in car accidents, falls, assaults, etc. Loss of consciousness often--but not always--is involved. Skull fracture may or may not have happened. Often, the victim looks OK. He may have no bleeding or skull depression, and MRIs may be negative (they usually are). However the following symptoms can indicate that a brain injury has occurred within the skull on a microscopic level: short term memory loss, concentration problems, mood swings (esp.tearfulness), confusion, inability to recall just-read material, etc
Seek specialized help
If you or your loved one exhibit these symptoms, get specialized help. Many family doctors don't give these symptoms the attention they deserve, and take the, "You'll be OK" approach. There are two types of doctors who specialize in these injuries: neuropsychologists, and neurologists. Neuropsychologists are not medical doctors, but are generally highly trained in recognizing and helping with these injuries. They will conduct appropriate diagnostic testing, and call in appropriate therapists. Neurologists are medical doctors and can work with neuropsychologists and therapists. Most importantly, don't take "no" for an answer if you feel you or your loved one really has such an injury. Persistence is often required before appropriate diagnosis is made, and treatment is rendered. However, it is important, since these injuries can go on for a lifetime if left untreated.
